… Where Fencers Become National Competitors

Zeta Fencing is the home of sabre fencing champions from the Greater Boston Area. Our coaches’ dedication and experience make the difference. So does our athletes’ hard work since it takes many hours of practice, patience, and strong work ethic to succeed in fencing. Winning competitions requires more than basic athletic training. Our competitive classes teach mental skills that go beyond the strip and make our fencers successful competitors in all aspects of life.

Our invitation-only competitive programs run for 10 months and require a fencer’s commitment for a full season. The programs include all aspects of training that competitive fencers need: conditioning, footwork, drills in a group setting, and many hours of bouting to gain fencing experience. All competitive level fencers are required to use their own equipment during practice and competition.

While age and fencing level are the main criteria for placing students in one of our competitive programs, admission to Zeta Fencing’s Cadet Competitive Program is exclusively the Head Coach’s decision that cannot be overturned by students or parents.

Cadet Competitive Class

The program is for older youth competitors with regional and some national tournament experience. Students in this program are expected to fence the complete national circuit for their age group. Most students are 13-16 years old and compete in the Y14, cadet, and junior age categories.

Group classes meet twice per week; each class lasts a full 2 hours. In addition, students participate in a competition class every week. This schedule provides 6 hours of fencing which includes athlete-focused instruction as well as supervised bouting at all skill levels.

Group Class: Tuesday & Thursday, 5:00-7:00pm

Competitive Bouting: Friday, 7:00-9:00pm

NEW for 2020/21: Students unable to join in-person group classes due to the COVID pandemic should register for two virtual classes/week delivered via Zoom at a reduced cost/month.

Zoom Class: Monday & Wednesday, 4:00-5:00pm

In order to maintain a high level of competitive fencing, all competitive students are required to take a minimum of one weekly individual lesson in addition to group classes. The lesson schedule is created upon the receipt of a complete registration.

At the beginning of the season, students will set up individual competition schedules with their coaches.

Class Schedule

All competitive classes start the week of Tuesday, September 8th, 2020 and end on June 30th, 2021. Classes run continuously with the exception of the following major holidays: Labor Day (September 7), Thanksgiving (no classes November 26-29), Christmas/New Year (no classes December 23-January 1), Memorial Day (May 31).

Class cancellations due to inclement weather or other circumstances beyond our control will always be communicated via email and social media. Please make sure to provide a reliable email contact to receive urgent updates regarding classes and lessons.

Program Fees & Registration

In order to sign up, students must commit to the entire season (or until the end of the season if they join later). Class fees can be paid monthly or for the entire season and are calculated as follows:

  • Program fee (6 hours of instruction & fencing/week): $270/month
  • Zeta Fencing club membership: $300/season
  • Zoom Class (2 hours of instruction/week): $150/month

With the exception of the Zoom class, we offer family discounts for all classes. The first family member pays the full price, and every additional family member receives a 25% discount on class fees. If family members are participating in programs with different fees, the higher-priced program has to be paid in full and the family discount is applied to the lower-priced program. For club membership, the reduced membership fee for each additional family member is $150 per season.

Once our Head Coach has invited you to join a Competitive Program, we need the following in order to register students:

  • Completed Registration Form and Season Contract: Download here. We need a completed and hand-signed form (2 pages!). You can either mail in the hard copy, or email a clearly readable scan/photo.
  • Proof of competitive USA Fencing membership: Our insurance requires that all students have to be current members of USA Fencing. In order to compete, a fencer needs a competitive membership with USA Fencing. Renew your membership here.
  • Payment: Please indicate on your registration form which type pf payment you choose. Class payments can be made by (1) check with your mailed registration form; (2) automated payments via online banking (please write date of your bank’s confirmation on the registration form), or (3) online credit card or bank payment through PayPal (please use the payment buttons below and write date of payment on the registration form).

Rent a personal locker: We have a limited number of lockers available for students in competitive classes. Until further notice, students may only use lockers to store masks, shoes, cords, and weapons. Uniforms and gloves must be brought home for cleaning after each class. In order to rent a locker, sign a rental agreement and return it to Zeta Fencing together with payment. Lockers are rented on a first-come, first-served basis. Costs and details can be found on the Locker Rental Agreement; download here.

We ask all fencers and parents to read and acknowledge Zeta Fencing’s Code of Conduct. By signing a registration form, you agree to its terms.

Class spaces are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis once a complete registration with full payment and proof of USA Fencing membership has been received.
